How Strong are Twisted Ratchet Straps?

I'm testing the myth that a twisted ratchet strap loses 50 percent of its load capacity by putting a twist in it. So I build a test rig to find out the truth. I test everything from 1 twist to 10 twists. I even test knots and water soaked straps. Exploding them produced some pretty shocking results!

It doesn't matter how many twists you're putting in, as it's the spindle part that is causing the strap to break each time. You need to get the experiment to break the strap somewhere where it's NOT TOUCHING ANYTHING. That's when you'll start getting real, worthwhile results. You somehow need to remove the spindle part.

Amazing. I feel like the way of making the knot could have big impact on the result, because on the slow mo it was apparent that the destructive forces weren't well distributed in the cross section of strap.

Again the old thesis "opinions are like buttholes, as in everybody has one" has been proven correct :) Perfectly executed tests! I find it interesting that they were rated at 10000 lbs breaking strength, yet even the control broke at 9433 lbs. Why is that? Did I misunderstand something?

I twist the strap all the time as well. BS that it looses strength. As long as you do not go crazy, it's as good as flat. When you drive, IE: 1000km with strapped load that is humming and singing all the way, you would do it too.

The dynamometer should have been placed at the opposite (non-ratchet) end of the strap, to leave a more equal length of strap at either end to accommodate the twists. The strap always broke at the ratchet, where there was only a very short length of strap left. I wonder if it would have made any difference to the results.

My guess about the significant strength reduction myth origin: Someone pinned the twist either over a load edge or even worse, wound it into the tightening spool when carelessly tightening it. Honestly I was expecting about 10% or so reduction, offsetting the deteriorating effect the "singing" vibration load will have on the strength (if a goods damage was observed, there must have been extra strap wear as well). But you actually proved there is really no reduction at all (beyond normal variation; unless the twisting becomes excessive or goes into some pinch point), so to me it says it is way better to prevent the vibrations by one or two twists. The thing is, the vibration will reduce the strength over time easily by more than 50%...

I'd like to see what happens if you double the strap. By that I mean running the strap over the top of the ram, fishing it through the second D ring welded to the table, taking it back over the ram and attaching both hooks to the same D ring. Would that double the load rating?

Try sling load operations, where you are flying objects that weigh tons, overhead with aircraft. When you twist the straps it shifts your load and creates a compromised load, which risk the load and lives. Bottom line, they aren't made to twist. Stop misleading.

While doing flatbed trucking and hauling literally anything you could possibly fit on 48’ by 8’ trailer. I would do one twist on each strap in order to reduce flapping/looseness on straps. As far as I know flat or no flap doesn’t do anything except flapping. Anyways, I wrote this before watching the video. In my opinion if you have no professional knowledge or use of any equipment just sit back and relax, on the other hand, more opinions makes you guys/creators make such an interesting content.

You need to try with that strap running over a sharp edge such as that of a unit of OSB sheets. The twist causes the stress to concentrate on a small point on a single edge of the strap and the strap is actually cleanly sliced by the edge of the OSB.

As a spinner, I was guessing that twist was not going to harm until it became Extreme, but Knots will kill you Every time. It's the Same with Spinning or plying Yarn or Rope. Twist strengthens Yarn and Rope. Knots in Plys will tend to weaken it knots in well spun and plied yarn or rope will tend to lower it's capacity slightly. But ,those straps are made with a Woven, extruded synthetic material, so the Twist, up to a point may Actually give fibers that are breaking a slightly better chance to Re-bond with surrounding fibers, and Cool instead of Failing. Is there any way you could try it with something that Mimics the Wind that it would experience in a distance hauling situation? To see if that has an effect on How well the strap survives.

In order to do a real test you need to do a real scientific style which is over 1000 of each style. Also if you actually noticed on the twisted ones it snapped where it was twisted not at the same spot that the other one was. Also if you have too many twists in your ropes going to the dump because of safety they will not allow you in because of actual tests that have been done proving that over time use of twists causes the twists to cut themselves or if you simply drive over a dip in the road the rope will snap.
